No more forums @ eVirtus!net
Possibly even less interesting than my first post here at the Spark|blog, comes this post about the removal of the forums. Mostly used for closed discussions with clients and co-conspirators (and as such had little (if any) to offer the casual surfer), they've have attracted way to much unwanted attention and work related to this. So the decision to kill it was rather simple.
For one or another reason a couple of phrases (from a forum post) attracted 20+ daily visitors each, of which many had to drop me a line telling me how big an idiot I was for tricking visitors to my site. Just for the record, I did not divulge into any form of trickery. A couple of post regarding uploading of images from my computer to the server did the trick (rephrase that sentence and you get a lot of hits). Of course the posts presented instructions on how accomplish the task with or without a component, they were just result notes from my testing without using a component...
The last couple of months the additional work surrounding the forums got even worse. Probably due to mo own clumsiness, but nevertheless annoying. For one or another reason I’d removed instructions (in robots.txt) not to spider images. The end result being numerous direct links to images located on my server, and many abused bytes seeking comfort. I have statistic material documenting that Simpson avatars are quite popular with ProBoard users. Anybody with a ".htaccess" blocking solution for IIS please contact me...
Lately there's also been a significant increase in spam signups. Although no-one has been able to post spam messages to the forum, it adds to my work load. If anybody wondered, a bunch of herbal viagra, gay porn and pirated software sites have made my block list...
I know there are many solutions (even some simple) to the above mentioned problems, but as the forums wasn’t used that much I didn’t bother. They’ll probably re-appear when the usefulness of having a discussion forum becomes more evident.
Lastly; Big thanks to everyone who participated!
